(this is the Wu Method of naming everything you and everyone else can think of, analysts get paid big bucks for this)

PUSH

Voice Dialing

Tethering (I could care less, till I need it)

Bluetooth support for Keyboards etc

One More Thing…

Support for larger sized screen – 7 or 10 inch – for Apple Tablet product to be released in September / October (with next iPod rev). If Apple plans to release something like this in 09 – this will be the occasion for developers to be told about it so they can.. develop.

Oh. And if Voice Play is announced – that one was mine too.

UPDATE: The silly section.

New Version of iTunes

Beatles on iTunes

Stability updates

and Flash support – why is no one talking about Flash support?

Apple have announced an event to discuss what they are working on in the next version of software for the iPhone – iPhone 3.0. It’s going to be held March 17 US time – in about 17 hours from now. So time for a few quick predictions.

My SHUT UP List (just do it to shut everyone up)

Cut & Paste

MMS

Landscape Mail

Video Recording

Turn by Turn GPS

To Do list

Custom ring settings / profiles

I’d be VERY surprised if all of these (except maybe video) wasn’t included. And seriously – after 3 revs of the software – people can rightly feel pissed if they aren’t.

Improvements to existing stuff

There are a lot of little improvements Apple could make to existing Apps.

Camera – timer / press anywhere to take pic etc. Build in the best ideas from the App Store

Better for uploading to FlickR / MobileMe / Facebook

Some iLife / iWork / MobileMe integration

Faces / Places ala iPhoto 09?

Integrated Synch with iCal and Google Calendars

Add Google Groups – Contacts Groups sync

NEW Features for iPhone 3.0

Remote Wipe for the Rest-Of-Us

XCode – more templates to make apps even easier (compare number of iPhone templates to Mac templates

Wireless Syncing to iTunes

And One More Thing – the big one – Core Fart Noises Layer for OSX 10.6

It will be interesting to see how many ideas Apple takes from Apps selling in the App Store. Yes it will suck for the developer, but you can’t use that as an excuse not to improve the OS. Not like they haven’t done it before with Mac OSX (Spaces, Dashboard etc)

During Phil Schiller’s presentation of the new Mobile Me at WWDC 08, he made a couple of Faux Par’s.

OK, the “Active Stink” one was pretty funny. Gotta believe thats a little inside joke at Apple and one that’s going to stick pretty well.

Hell – if the name fits…. Active Sync sucks.

But a few minutes later I think he really slipped up – and no one else seems to have noticed.

To Quote:

Phil Schiller: 1:08:30 “Mobile Me stores your information up in the cloud. So you can get to it from anywhere, using any of your devices. Using a Mac, happen to use a PC, and most importantly, use one of our great new devices like an iPhone…”

LIKE an iPhone ?? What else is there Uncle Phil? (Yes I know there is the Touch but I’m pretty sure thats not what he meant)

New devices coming soon from Apple once the 3G frenzy wears off? See you in August / September.

Been looking at the iPhone page for Maps with GPS feature.

Will this replace my “proper” existing GPS (a Road Angel 6000)?

It seems obvious that it should – but I don’t see the same perspective view that I am used to with a GPS in a car.

I guess the much bigger screen and the zooming functions with the Google Maps would make up for it – might even be better.

Anyone used an iPhone as a GPS before? Put your experiences in Comments.

Now that the “SteveNote” from WWDC has been finished – lets see how I went with my predictions.

RIGHT

100% – 3G iPhone
100% – iPhone 2.0 software & App Store
95% – 3G iPhone to be triple or quad band
90% – GPS on 3G iPhone
75% – 3G iPhone in different colors
70% – OSX 10.6 announced
95% – OSX 10.6 called Snow Leopard
50% – .Mac refresh announcement
10% – iPhone Nano / Alternate models
0% – OSX 10.6 to have no new features

WRONG

75% – New MacBooks announced
65% – BluRay available
95% – .Mac Free (95% the basic service will be made free if its refreshed)
20% – MacBook Air 2.0
10% – iPhone gets plastic back
10% – MacBook Air Pro

DON’T KNOW YET

95% – Better camera on iPhone
65% – OSX 10.6 to be Intel Macs only

HOW DID WE GO?

10 right, 6 wrong (including a couple of long shots), 2 we don’t know yet.

Pretty happy with my guesses. I was pretty sure this was going to be the 3G iPhone 2.0 show with not a lot of room for other things like new Macs. Thought one of those I got wrong might have made a sexy “One More Thing” – but I guess Apple want the next 4 weeks of millions of dollars of free press to be all about the iPhone.

I like the changes to .Mac – now MobileMe. Pity the logo reminds me so much of Windows ME. Don’t think MobileME will ever really take off until it become a free service for all. $99 for a solo user with a iPhone is just a little too much. It rocks when you have multiple machines, but really it should just be free.

iTunes Music Store would never gotten to 80% market if people had to pay for it.

I kinda hate the plastic backs on the 3G iPhones. But as someone who has spent last few years with Motorola phones (with metal backs) and the crappy reception – it might not be such a bad thing.

No (RED)?

No 32Gig version?

Quick note on 10.6 Snow Leopard

I think the “low key” treatment of Snow Leopard was a good idea. The next 3 months are going to be a press frenzy on the 3G iPhone. The gestation of 10.5 Leopard from public announcement to release was way too long. But given 5000 developers are there for WWDC – your not going to call them back in a few months to show em 10.6. No doubt there will be a big Snow Leopard feature in January 09, when the software will be only a few months away from release.

No new features? Hardly. Improved enterprise support, new video with QuickTime X, no doubt the next generation of MobileME integration. Maybe nothing as shiny as Time Machine or Quick Look – but all important improvements nonetheless.

Roll on July 11.

Following on from my WWDC 2008 Predictions Part Two – OSX 10.6 , lets look at the rumors around the refresh of the .Mac service.

.Mac refresh announcement – 50%

On the surface, any announcement about some trivial upgrade to the .Mac service would seem out of place at WWDC08. The rumors of a name change involving Apples recent acquisition of me.com – possibly point to something bigger to me.

Extending .Mac to Windows computers? Oh Yes Please! Even just for sharing Safari bookmarks.

Extending .Mac functionality to iPhones – seems obvious doesn’t it?

Making .Mac FREE and available to all Mac users in a “Beta” form (ala Bootcamp in Tiger) – this make more sense than anything to me regarding the “next step” for .Mac

(A “test” of .Mac for all could then form the basis for OSX 10.6)

FREE .Mac – 95%

Why make .Mac free? Sure it doesn’t have a huge take up with users – but I have seen figures somewhere it turns over $100 million in sales – a nice cherry on top for sure.

But make it free-for-all, and suddenly the opportunities for developers to create some really interesting “cloud based” stuff really opens up.

.Mac is the “cloud” that Apple has neglected for years. Let it go free and let developers and customers turn it into something awesome for Mac 2.0.

As for existing customers – like myself. Credit us @ the iTunes store and I’ll be happy. I’ll just be happy to see .Mac developed more.

The Apple World Wide Developers Conference – WWDC08 – is barely days away from kicking off. Everyone is expecting some Pretty Big Things to be announced – 3G iPhones, OSX 10.6, new .Mac service, new MacBooks, iPhone Nano and lots more.

Rather than one big post, I’ll break up my thoughts on what I expect /hope to see. Let’s start with the iPhone.

iPhone 3G – 100%

Yes the 3G iPhone will be announced. There has been too many phone carriers around the world announcing plans to offer the iPhone “soon” for it not to be announced. There has been no “leak” or “rumor” from Apple to throw cold water on peoples expectations – nothing to say that it’s been delayed till the end of the year.

Availability might be another thing. I’d say it’s 50-50 as to the 3G iPhone being available as of the announcement on Monday, or available “in a few weeks – or even a few months” as the original iPhone was. I doubt the release would be more than 2 months away, and of course I’d love to see it available internationally as of this week.

Not to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars of FREE press and hype Apple got with the extended introduction last time.

iPhone 2.0 – 100%

Separate to the 3G iPhone being announced will be the upgrading of the software for all iPhones to version 2.0. This was announced back in February 08, but I expect a big deal will be made of the applications that people have already made with the SDK.

(The Software Developers Kit – SDK, and the new Apps Store, allows anyone to write and distribute application for the iPhone, rather than just Apple as it has been for the first 12 months of iPhone)

Expect to see Steve Jobs introducing some big name companies who have written apps for the iPhone covering games, enterprise, productivity etc.

GPS on 3G iPhone? – 90%

If they can keep the size and the battery life – then GPS should be included with the 3G iPhone.

Better camera? 95%

The chipset that Apple are supposedly including with the 3G iPhone supports a 5 Megapixel camera. As one of the disappointing “includes” with the original iPhone – I think upgrading it to what is basically the standard for decent phone cameras now, is a done deal.

Triple Band – Quad Band – 95%

The 3G iPhone has to be capable of working in all of the markets that it has been “unofficially announced” for. Plus too many travel now between countries and wont accept a phone that doesn’t go with them.

With all the effort Apple have put into iPhone 2.0 for getting it to work with enterprise – especially Microsoft Exchange, it only makes sense to make the 3G iPhone global as best they can.

Nano iPhone / Alternate Models – 10%

I don’t think Apple will release more than one model of iPhone. I’m 90% sure we will see a new model before Christmas, but Apple won’t want to take away from the 3G iPhone / 2.0 announcement itself.

A Premium 3G model will lead the way in sales and revenue before offering more models in September with a iPod refresh.

Plastic Back / Colors – 10% / 75%

I really hope Apple don’t give up the Aluminum back for a plastic thing. The mockups “leaked” onto the web look cheap and nasty – I just don’t like plastic. Given the noise they have made by converting a few million computers from plastic to Aluminum, I don’t see them replacing that with an iPhone they will sell 10 times the amount of.

I really DO hope we see a couple of colors. A Product (RED) iPhone would be awesome (perhaps Orange?). As long as its not the wusy bland pastels of the current Nano iPods.
